Halotalea alkalilenta
, isolated from alkaline alperujo, an alkaline sludge‐like olive mill waste sampled in the vicinity of Toplou Monastery, Sitia (Crete), Greece. Cells are nonsporulating Gram‐negative, motile by peritrichous flagella, rods. Colonies on agar plates are small and nonpigmented, coloring pale yellow. The organism is alkalitolerant, growing up to pH 11; extremely halotolerant, tolerating up to 2.6 M NaCl; and sugar tolerant, resisting up to 2.5 and 1.7 M

‐glucose and maltose, respectively. It is a mesophilic facultative anaerobe, which lacks cytochrome c oxidase activity and displays delayed fermentation ability on glucose and dulcitol. It is chemoorganotrophic, capable of degrading phenolics, which utilizes a range of amino acids, sugars, alcohols, and organic acids as sole carbon and energy sources.
