“…Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) has been found to be safe and effective in the treatment of depression and mania in older adults, with and without dementia (Nelson and Rosenberg, 1991;Tomac et al, 1997;Tew et al, 1999;Rao and Lyketsos, 2000;McDonald & Thompson, 2001;Weintraub and Lippman, 2001;Stoppe et al, 2006). The few published reports that investigated the use of ECT for the treatment of agitation in dementia have been case studies and retrospective chart reviews that provided support for the utility of ECT as a safe and beneficial intervention strategy (Roccaforte et al, 2000;Grant and Mohan, 2001;Bang et al, 2008;Sutor and Rasmussen, 2008;Ujkaj et al, 2010).
