Ectoparasite loads in sympatric urban populations of the northern white-breasted and the European hedgehog

Abstract: We investigated abundance and prevalence of ticks and fleas infesting urban populations of two species of hedgehogs: the northern white-breasted hedgehog (Erinaceus roumanicus) and the European hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus). The hedgehogs were captured in the city of Poznań (western Poland) over the period of 4 years. Both species of hedgehogs were infested with the castor bean tick (Ixodes ricinus), the hedgehog tick (Ixodes hexagonus), and the hedgehog flea (Archeopsylla erinacei). The northern white-breast… Show more

“…The risk of transmitting infectious or parasitic agents to humans has risen by the increasing habit of keeping hedgehogs as pets. Direct contact with hedgehogs, litter, feed, contaminated pots or their excrements may contribute to human infection and the spread of zoonoses (KRAWCZYK et al, 2015;DZIEMIAN et al, 2015). The present study describes the first case of acariosis induced by Caparinia tripilis (Michael, 1889) (Acari: Psoroptidae) associated with Microsporum spp.…”

“…Poor fauna is typical for the urban scenery [ 61 ]. Small to medium-sized mammals such as hedgehogs which can host all life stages of ticks [ 62 ] play an active part in the maintenance of TBPs in these areas.…”

“…The activity of I. hexagonus is closely linked to the density and behaviour of its primary host, the European hedgehog ( Erinaceus europaeus ) [ 31 ]. I. hexagonus is more prevalent earlier in the year than I. ricinus [ 31 , 32 ], coinciding with the emergence of hedgehogs from hibernation [ 33 ], and possibly explaining the earlier peak of tick activity we identified in cats. The second autumnal peak could represent interaction between cats and hedgehogs at a time when hedgehogs are preparing for hibernation and juveniles are gaining independence, leading to greater hedgehog numbers being seen [ 33 ], all at a time when I. hexagonus is also at great abundance on the hedgehogs themselves [ 31 , 32 ].…”
