Ectopic Overexpression of Maize Heat Stress Transcription Factor ZmHsf05 Confers Drought Tolerance in Transgenic Rice

Abstract: Drought is a key factor affecting plant growth and development. Heat shock transcription factors (Hsfs) have been reported to respond to diverse abiotic stresses, including drought stress. In the present study, functional characterization of maize heat shock transcription factor 05 (ZmHsf05) gene was conducted. Homologous analysis showed that ZmHsf05 belongs to Class A2 Hsfs. The mRNA expression level of ZmHsf05 can be affected by drought, high temperature, salt, and abscisic acid (ABA) treatment. Ectopic over… Show more

“…Maize ZmHsf04 conferred increased thermo and salt-stress tolerance in transgenic Arabidopsis [ 33 ]. ZmHsf05 improved thermotolerance in Arabidopsis and enhanced drought tolerance in rice [ 34 , 35 ], while overexpression of ZmHsf08 reduced salt and drought tolerance in maize [ 30 ]. The recently reported OsHSFA3 played an important role in ABA-mediated drought tolerance in Arabidopsis [ 36 ].…”

“…Heat shock transcription factors ( Hsfs ) are key components of signal transduction and also regulate the response of genes to stress ( Si et al., 2021 ). Moreover, Hsfs members such as SPL7 , HsfA1b , HsfA4a , and HsfA8 are involved in the homeostasis of reactive oxygen species (ROS) under DS conditions ( Hoang et al., 2019 ).…”

“…TFs can ensure the expression of target gene at a specific intensity in a specific time and space. Some maize TFs were proved to be correlated with heat tolerance, such as ZmHsf04 gene ( Jiang et al., 2017 ), ZmHsf05 gene ( Si et al., 2021 ), ZmWRKY106 gene ( Wang et al., 2018 ), and ZmNAC074 ( Xi et al., 2022 ). We predicted 41 putative TFs form the common up- and down-regulated genes, they belong to 18 TF families, including the HSF and NAC TF family, the largest one is the ERF family.…”
