“…Primary mediastinal goiter, i.e., a goiter with a separate blood supply originating from the mediastinal vessels, is rarely observed. This type of goiter accounts for less than 1% of surgical patients [6]. In the present series, the authors defined goiters as mediastinal when at least 50% of their mass was situated below the sternal notch and, additionally, when the lower pole of the thyroid lobe extended to or was situated below the aortic arch level.…”

“…This concept is supported by the very high percentage of sternotomies in recurrent goiter (p<0.05). Such aberrant adenomas that are loosely or not at all associated with the thyroid are rare, but they statistically more frequently require the extension of the surgical approach [6,7,17,20,22].…”

“…True ectopic thyroid in the thorax are encountered in less than 1% of all intarthoracic goiter [3,4]. Ectopic thyroid tissue is the result of aberrant embryogenesis of the thyroid gland during its passage from the floor of the primitive foregut to its pretracheal position.…”

“…The incidence of ectopic thyroid tissue is 1 in every 100,000 to 300,000 in general population 2 and lingual thyroid (first described by Hickman 3 in 1869) is the most common ectopic site (90%). 4 Lingual thyroid is common in females (80%). 5 In 70% of the cases, it is the only functioning thyroid tissue.…”
