“…Due to the more intensely competitive atmosphere of basketball, (which was also the case for the junior basketball players in this study), a similar situation has been observed in many studies of young athletes, for example, Diaz in his study of the relative age effect (RAE) in the U12 basketball championships in Spain, found that 83.4 per cent of the 2,268 players were born in the rst half of the year (41), and Arietta's study of the relationship between relative age and realistic performance among young relative age (RAE) study on the relationship between relative age and real-world performance among talented basketball players also found that U16, U18, and U20 European Championship athletes had a high percentage of rstyear rst-borns, especially among male athletes (42). and Delorme et al found that rst-year rst-borns were underrepresented among athletes who gave up on the sport in the 2005-2006 French Junior Basketball Championships and had a very high percentage and a clear competitive advantage for athletes born in the rst half of the year (43).…”

“…While there is currently no evidence con rming the presence of RAE in basketball in China, particularly during adolescence, analogous studies have been conducted in other countries. For instance, researchers examining the birth months of adolescent basketball players in the French ACB and Spanish basketball leagues (LEB1 and LEB2) observed that male athletes born in the rst quarter exhibited a higher prevalence of superior performance compared to those born in the fourth quarter (14). Additionally, a study on RAE in the German professional basketball league revealed its persistent existence as an inequality that could potentially impact athletes later in their careers (35).…”

“…Notably, the top-ranked teams displayed a notable trend of having more players born in the first half of the year. This suggests that U12 basketball teams might experience improved performance due to the RAE [ 41 ]. Contrastingly, other studies propose varying patterns of RAE in basketball.…”
