Eddy-resolving Simulation of CAS-LICOM3 for Phase 2 of the Ocean Model Intercomparison Project

Abstract: A 61-year (1958–2018) global eddy-resolving dataset for phase 2 of the Ocean Model Intercomparison Project has been produced by the version 3 of Chinese Academy of Science, the State Key Laboratory of Numerical Modeling for Atmospheric Sciences and Geophysical Fluid Dynamics/Institute of Atmospheric Physics (LASG/IAP) Climate system Ocean Model (CAS-LICOM3). The monthly and a part of the surface daily data in this study can be accessed on the Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF) node. Besides the details of the… Show more

“…IAP-LICOM is a global configuration of the LASG/IAP Climate system Ocean Model (LICOM) (Zhang and Liang, 1989;Liu et al, 2004Liu et al, , 2012Yu et al, 2018; e.g., Li et al, 2013;Bao et al, 2013) and of the CAS Earth System Model (CAS-ESM; Minghua Zhang, personal communication, 2019). Version 3 of LICOM (LICOM3) is coupled to CICE4 through the NCAR flux coupler 7 (Craig et al, 2012;Lin et al, 2016). The surface salinity is restored to the monthly PHC3.0 climatology over the entire domain with a salinity piston velocity of 50 m per 4 years (50 m per 30 d for the sea ice regions).…”

“…At present, the state‐of‐the‐art eddy‐resolving ocean general circulation models (OGCMs) for climate simulation are capable of reproducing the global distribution of eddy kinetic energy (EKE; e.g., Chassignet et al., 2020; Iovino et al., 2016; Kiss et al., 2020; Y. Li et al., 2020; Luecke et al., 2020; Maltrud & McClean, 2005; Masumoto et al., 2004; Rieck et al., 2015; Yu et al., 2012) and mesoscale eddy properties (e.g., Cipollone et al., 2017; Moreton et al., 2020; Petersen et al., 2013). Both the rich eddy activities in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) and the western boundary currents (WBCs) and their extensions and the poor eddy activities in the remaining places can be captured by eddy‐resolving OGCMs (e.g., Chassignet et al., 2020).…”

“…Our analysis mainly relies on eddy‐resolving simulations from four global ocean–sea ice models participating in Ocean Model Intercomparison Project phase 2 (OMIP‐2). To test the influence of different atmospheric reanalysis data on the model performance, we also carry out two additional experiments using the State Key Laboratory of Numerical Modeling for Atmospheric Sciences, and Geophysical Fluid Dynamics/Institute of Atmospheric Physics (LASG/IAP) Climate system Ocean Model of the Chinese Academy of Science version 3 (IAP‐LICOM3; Y. Li et al., 2020; Lin et al., 2019; H. Liu et al., 2004, 2012; Yu et al., 2012). The spatial distribution of eddies is classified as eddy‐rich and eddy‐poor regions in order for us to trace the biases and to improve the performance of the eddy‐resolving ocean model in the future.…”

“…2.1. Model description FGOALS-f3-H is a fully coupled climate system model, which includes the atmospheric component model-version 2.2 of the Finite-volume Atmospheric Model of IAP/LASG (FAMIL2.2) (He et al, 2019;Bao et al, 2020;Li et al, 2021); an ocean component model-version 3 of the LASG/IAP Climate system Ocean Model (LICOM3.0) (Li et al, 2020b); a land component model-version 4.0 of the Community Land Model (CLM4.0) (Lawrence et al, 2011); and a sea-ice component model-version 4 of the Community Ice Code (CICE4.0) (Hunke and Lipscomb, 2010). The coupler is version 7 of the coupled module (Craig et al, 2012) from the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR).…”
