Blockchain was always associated with Bitcoin, cryptocurrencies, and digital asset trading. However, the benefits of Blockchain are far beyond that. It has been recently used to support and augment many other technologies, including the Internet-of-Things (IoT). IoT, with the help of Blockchain, paves the way for futuristic smart environments, like smart homes, smart transportation, smart energy trading, smart industries, smart supply chains, and more. To enable these smart environments, IoT devices, machines, appliances, and vehicles, will need to intercommunicate without the need for a centralized trusted party. Blockchain can replace third trusted parties by providing secure means of decentralization in such trustless environments. They also provide security enforcement, privacy assurance, authentication, and other important features to IoT ecosystems. Besides the benefits of Blockchain-IoT integration for smart environments, other technologies also have important features and benefits that attracted the research community. Software-Defined Networking (SDN), Fog, Edge, and Cloud Computing technologies, for example, play an important role in enabling realistic IoT applications. Moreover, the integration of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms provides smart, dynamic, and autonomous decisionmaking capabilities for IoT devices in smart environments. To push the research further in this domain, we provide in this paper a comprehensive survey that includes state-of-the-art technological integration, challenges, and solutions for smart environments, and the role of Blockchain and IoT technologies as the building blocks of such smart environments. We also demonstrate how the level of integration between these technologies has increased over the years, which brings us closer to the futuristic view of smart environments. We further discuss the current need to provide general-purpose Blockchain platforms that can adapt to different design requirements of different applications and solutions. Finally, we provide a simplified architecture of futuristic smart environments that integrates all these technologies, showing the advantage of such integration.

Smart cities use Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) to enrich existing public services and to improve citizens’ quality of life. In this scenario, Mobile CrowdSensing (MCS) has become, in the last few years, one of the most prominent paradigms for urban sensing. MCS allow people roaming around with their smart devices to collectively sense, gather, and share data, thus leveraging the possibility to capture the pulse of the city. That can be very helpful in emergency scenarios, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, that require to track the movement of a high number of people to avoid risky situations, such as the formation of crowds. In fact, using mobility traces gathered via MCS, it is possible to detect crowded places and suggest people safer routes/places. In this work, we propose an edge-anabled mobile crowdsensing platform, called ParticipAct, that exploits edge nodes to compute possible dangerous crowd situations and a federated blockchain network to store reward states. Edge nodes are aware of all critical situation in their range and can warn the smartphone client with a smart push notification service that avoids firing too many messages by adapting the warning frequency according to the transport and the specific subarea in which clients are located.

Edge computing is a product of the evolution of IoT and the development of cloud computing technology, providing computing, storage, network, and other infrastructure close to users. Compared with the centralized deployment model of traditional cloud computing, edge computing solves the problems of extended communication time and high convergence traffic, providing better support for low latency and high bandwidth services. With the increasing amount of data generated by users and devices in IoT, security and privacy issues in the edge computing environment have become concerns. Blockchain, a security technology developed rapidly in recent years, has been adopted by many industries, such as finance and insurance. With the edge computing capability, deploying blockchain platforms/applications on edge computing platforms can provide security services for network edge environments. Although there are already solutions for integrating edge computing with blockchain in many IoT application scenarios, they slightly lack scalability, portability, and heterogeneous data processing. In this paper, we propose a trusted edge platform to integrate the edge computing framework and blockchain network for building an edge security environment. The proposed platform aims to preserve the data privacy of the edge computing client. The design based on the microservice architecture makes the platform lighter. To improve the portability of the platform, we introduce the Edgex Foundry framework and design an edge application module on the platform to improve the business capability of Edgex. Simultaneously, we designed a series of well-defined security authentication microservices. These microservices use the Hyperledger Fabric blockchain network to build a reliable security mechanism in the edge environment. Finally, we build an edge computing network using different hardware devices and deploy the trusted edge platform on multiple network nodes. The usability of the proposed platform is demonstrated by testing the round-trip time (RTT) of several important workflows. The experimental results demonstrate that the platform can meet the availability requirements in real-world usage scenarios.
