Edge Effects on Reference Electrode Measurements in PEM Fuel Cells

Abstract: A reference electrode specifically designed for proton exchange membrane ͑PEM͒ fuel cells ͑FCs͒ was developed. By using the Nafion membrane material as the electrolyte, this reference electrode eliminates the needs to modify the normal FC setup and can be easily integrated into FC systems. Experimental and modeling studies had been conducted to further understand the effects of misalignment in the main electrodes on the reference electrode signals. It was found that the reference sensing point is greatly affec… Show more

“…17,18 Kjeang et al 19 placed reference electrodes in the reservoirs of an operating microfluidic flow battery where the reference electrodes' positions in the reservoirs resulted in large separation between the working electrode and the reference electrodes. Generally, sandwichtype and edge-type reference electrodes are commonly used for the study of thin layer cells.…”

“…3) was implemented into the cell to investigate the influence of the cathode gas humidification on the half-cell potentials to the full cell voltage. The experimental arrangement was inspired by the reference electrode set-up in PEM fuel cells described by He and Nguyen [20]. Our concept combined the use of a commercially available reversible hydrogen reference electrode (RHE) (HydroFlex Ò , Gaskatel) with the reported set-up of the detachable reference electrode.…”
