Edge-Preserving Smoothing of Natural Images Based on Geodesic Time Functions
Abstract:In this paper, we address the problem of edge-preserving smoothing of natural images. We introduce a novel adaptive approach derived from mathematical morphology as a preprocessing stage in feature extraction and/or image segmentation. Like other filtering methods, it assumes that the local neighbourhood of a pixel contains the essential information required for the estimation of local image properties. It performs a weighted averaging by combining both spatial and tonal information in a single similarity meas… Show more

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
