Running IoT applications on edge computing infrastructures has the benefits of low response times and efficient bandwidth usage. System verification on a testbed is required to deploy IoT applications in production environments. In a testbed, Docker containers are preferable for a smooth transition of tested application programs to production environments. In addition, the round-trip times (RTT) of Docker containers to clients must be ensured, according to the target application's response time requirements. However, in existing testbed systems, the RTTs between Docker containers and clients are not ensured. Thus, we must undergo a large amount of configuration data including RTTs between all pairs of wireless base station nodes and servers to set up a testbed environment. In this paper, we present an edge computing testbed system with simple application programming interfaces (API) for testbed users that ensures RTTs between Docker containers and clients. The proposed system automatically determines which servers to place Docker containers on according to virtual regions and the RTTs specified by the testbed users through APIs. The virtual regions provide reduced size information about the RTTs in a network. In the proposed system, the configuration data size is reduced to one divided by the number of the servers and the command arguments length is reduced to approximately one-third or less, whereas the increased system running time is 4.3 s.

EdgeNet is a public Kubernetes cluster dedicated to network and distributed systems research, supporting experiments that are deployed concurrently by independent groups. Its nodes are hosted by multiple institutions around the world. It represents a departure from the classic Kubernetes model, where the nodes that are available to a single tenant reside in a small number of wellinterconnected data centers. The free open-source EdgeNet code extends Kubernetes to the edge, making three key contributions: multi-tenancy, geographical deployments, and single-command node installation. We show that establishing a public Kubernetes cluster over the internet, with multiple tenants and multiple hosting providers is viable. Preliminary results also indicate that the EdgeNet testbed that we run provides a satisfactory environment to run a variety of experiments with minimal network overhead. COPA: Experimenter-Level Container Orchestration for Networking Testbeds

As Cloud Computing (CC) branched areas such as Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) and Fog computing are still on growing research interest. The creation of new tools to improve quality and speed the experimentation in such areas is a general interest. In this article, we propose COPA, an experimenter-level container orchestration tool for networking testbeds. This tool provides a friendly interface for the experimenter test container orchestration algorithms which can start, stop, copy, and even migrate a container from one host to another. COPA also includes network/resources monitoring to feed the experimenter's orchestration algorithm so that it can make decisions based on real-time environment information. Furthermore, the experimenter can automatize the experiment scenario setup and deployment by pre-configuring in COPA. This tool helps the experimenter in testing different scenarios and quickly changing experiment parameters. Considering these features, COPA aims to provide an experimentation architecture to deploy and test container orchestration algorithms. Furthermore, we provide a case study explaining how COPA can be a key tool in the MEC and Network Function Virtualization (NFV) experimentation environments. This tool was already deployed in Federated Union of Telecommunications Research Facilities for an EU-Brazil Open Laboratory (FUTEBOL) testbeds as part of the control framework and was well validated by the project reviewers and partners.INDEX TERMS testbed, multi-access edge computing, future networks, container, orchestration.
