Editorial: crime patterns in time and space: the dynamics of crime opportunities in urban areas

Abstract: The routine activity approach and associated crime pattern theory emphasise how crime emerges from spatio-temporal routines. In order to understand this crime should be studied in both space and time. However, the bulk of research into crime patterns and related activities has investigated the spatial distributions of crime, neglecting the temporal dimension. Specifically, disaggregation of crime by place and by time, for example hour of day, day of week, month of year, season, or school day versus none school… Show more

“…Based on the analysis, it is known that the historical crime accidents have correlation reach 0.947 which indicates very high trend of crime occurred in the same place. This further confirms that crime tends to be concentrated in certain places even near spaces with highly crime risk (Newton and Felson, 2015).…”

“…These studies have focused particularly on land uses, types of land use, and urban forms, such as the physical features of neighbourhoods [1], roads [2], and shopping centres and bus stations [3][4][5]. In this paper, we attempted to investigate the link between the extension area of urbanization and the potential for crime by analysing satellite images over time together with the number of crimes during the same timeframe using remote sensing techniques.…”

However, knowing the correlation between expansion of urban areas and crime is very important for criminologists and urban planning decision-makers.…”

“…Specifically, it has been widely shown that criminal activities often exhibit complex relationships both in space and time [25,33]. Against this background, hotspot maps are a popular tool for analyzing and visualizing the distribution of crimes across space and time [11], and are also practically used for crime prediction in order to optimize the deployment of the police and crime reduction resources.…”
