Grass and Forage Science (GFS) is the major international journal with a primary emphasis on grasslands and has a history of publishing articles based on presentations at conferences and symposia, such as the International Silage Conference (Elgersma et al., 2019) and the European Grassland Federation (EGF) (Elgersma et al., 2021). This special issue of GFS includes a book review (Isselstein, 2022) on the history of the International Grassland Congress -1927 to 2020 (Allen et al., 2021) and four papers based on presentations from the XXIV International Grassland Congress (IGC). The meeting was hosted by Kenya, but due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it was held virtually on 25-29 October 2021.The theme of the joint XXIV th IGC and XI th International Rangeland congress was "Sustainable Use of Grassland and Rangeland Resources for Improved Livelihoods" but as rangelands have traditionally not been in the scope of GFS, only contributions focusing on grasslands were considered for inclusion in this special issue of GFS.Authors of several papers were invited to submit material for consideration for publication in GFS.
