Educational Added Value Unit: Development and Testing of a Measure for Educational Activities

Abstract: The EAVU tracking tool holds promise as a mechanism to track educational activities of different faculty pathways. EAVU collection could be of particular benefit to hospitalists, who often perform unsupported teaching activities. Additional studies are needed to determine how to apply a similar process in different institutions and to determine how EAVUs could be used for additional support for teaching, curriculum development, and educational scholarship.

“…The most common issue raised by programs focused on the data collection process. Issues in this domain involved concerns about the validity of faculty self-reported data 16,22,47,[50][51][52] and about the lack of knowledge surrounding the impact of activities being reported and collected due to the concerns about the metrics themselves or the lack of metrics in general. 22,26,37,45,47,58,61,65 The next most discussed concerns with EVU systems involved those inherent to the system itself.…”

“…15,16,21,61,65 Unique approaches were described by a pediatrics program that used focus groups to inform the development of their program, 61 whereas a family medicine program engaged the use of an outside consultant to ensure that an unbiased party could present the EVU proposal and shepherd the faculty through an open discussion of any concerns. 16 Only a few programs described the process of gathering formal evidence-based data to inform the development of their EVU system, with mention of a formal literature search, 47,53 reaching out to peer institutions, 47 or using a formal Delphi approach to select and/or weigh activities. 47,54 The most frequent way of disseminating new EVU systems was through presentations at faculty meetings.…”
