The restrictions inherent in the use of the conventional reference in capillary viscometry, the viscosity of water at 20 C, have led to increased interest in absolute viscometers. The viscosity laboratory of the Bureau National de Métrologie, Laboratoire National d'Essais (BNM-LNE) has begun the study of an absolute falling-ball viscometer. The principal difficulties with this system are the measurement of the velocity of the ball and the corrections to compensate for the effects exercised on the ball. Results from a preliminary experiment indicate that uncertainties better than those of capillary viscometers can be obtained. The use of a velocity measurement video system should further reduce the uncertainties.

Teaching Music Performance in Higher Education

This chapter seeks an understanding of in what ways practices of artistic research are contributing to developing the teaching and learning of music performance in Higher Music Education (HME). It is built on two of the authors’ long-term experience of teaching artistic research methods and supervising theses in first and second cycle programs in Sweden. The chapter consists of three main parts. First, we provide a brief historical overview of how artistic research in music was implemented in Sweden, with particular attention to knowledge claims and method development. Second, we consider the impact of the Bologna process on HME in Sweden, a process in which the authors have been personally involved. It has, among other things, demanded a shift from teacher-driven provision toward student-centred higher education. The third part presents an overarching qualitative and quantitative analysis of completed bachelor and master theses from 2020–2022 within the bachelor and master programs in music performance in the Piteå School of Music at Luleå University of Technology with regard to aims, research questions and methods. For each of the six identified categories, one thesis was selected for a more detailed qualitative analysis, after which the authors were interviewed. The study proposes three main implications for HME: artistic research has shown potential to enable more student-centred forms of teaching and learning, based to a great extent on its use of reflexive methods; the use of reflexive methods shows great potential to enhance life-long learning; and finally that the role of artistic experimentation, as expressed in the student theses, suggests that the notion of the artistic research laboratory may be a potential model for how the offerings of HME to teaching and learning may be reconsidered.

The falling ball method (FBM) is one of the well‐established techniques for measuring the viscosity of Newtonian liquids at the room as well as at elevated temperatures and pressures. Owing to its simplicity and low cost, the possibility of extending its range of application to non‐Newtonian systems including virgin and filled polymer melts, composites, polymer‐solutions, and so forth, is explored here, In this work, theoretical results for the flow of power‐law fluids past a sphere have been used to extract the values of the zero‐shear viscosity and shear‐dependent viscosity in the low‐shear rate limit. The theoretical scheme outlined here has been validated by presenting comparisons with experimental results for scores of polymer solutions for which both falling sphere and rheological data are available in the literature. Indeed, the good correspondence obtained between these two independent data is encouraging and it is thus possible to use the FBM for shear‐thinning systems when the resulting Reynolds numbers are such that the flow is viscosity‐dominated, and the inertial effects are negligible. This implies that the Reynolds number should be ≤ ~1 for shear‐thinning fluids and ≤ ~10−5 for shear‐thickening fluids.
