“…We conclude that awareness of the content of an applicable guideline (3) is poor among PHs and PTs working in public pharmacies in Germany. This is in line with previous studies of physicians treating constipation in children (5,(11)(12)(13)(14)(15). Accordingly, recommendations based on fictional but typical case studies differed considerably from those in the guidelines.…”

“…We conclude that awareness of the content of an applicable guideline [3] is poor among PHs and PTs working in public pharmacies in Germany. This is in line with previous studies of physicians treating constipation in children [5,[11][12][13][14][15]. While it is likely that this similarly applies to physicians involved in the care of adult with constipation, this needs to be determined in future studies.…”

“…As multiple options are available for the medical treatment of constipation [21,22], HCPs working in pharmacies have a key role in advising patients on the appropriate use and selection of laxatives. Studies among physicians treating constipation in children have consistently reported limited knowledge of and adherence to applicable guidelines [5,[11][12][13][14][15]. The state of knowledge of PHs and PTs advising patients with constipation is less clear.…”

“…Studies in various other indications indicate that guideline knowledge and adherence among physicians is suboptimal, for instance among primary care physicians [ 4 ] and pediatricians [ 5 , 6 ] in functional constipation in children, urologists in prostate cancer screening [ 7 ], hospital-based physicians in infection management [ 8 ], or primary care physicians in the use of antibiotics in the management of acute lower respiratory tract infections [ 9 ]. Against this background, we have performed an online survey among groups of HCPs, specifically GPs, PAs and PTs to explore their awareness and knowledge of applicable guidelines on acute cough and to compare their recommendation behavior to that in the guideline; moreover, we have investigated whether recommendation behavior changes acutely following exposure to excerpts from the German Respiratory Society guideline [ 3 ].…”
