Educational Program for Promoting the Application of Bioclimatic and Sustainable Architecture in Elementary Schools

Abstract: The global environmental damage caused mainly by anthropogenic activities such as fossil fuels and the emission of greenhouse gases (GHG) to the atmosphere has become more severe in recent years, provoking alterations such as the so-called climate change and its consequences. Therefore, it is urgently needed to apply corrective measures to solve the problem. Buildings consume more than half of the energy available for cooling, heating, lighting of spaces, cooking and water heating, among others. Thus, signific… Show more

“…For this particular purpose, bioclimatic housing design should be regarded as a field of special attention. Bioclimatic architecture principles are used to improve the housing energy efficiency through the proper capitalization of the existing environmental and location conditions, such as temperature, humidity, solar radiation and prevailing winds [9]. An expected solution among several habitability optimum conditions, is the thermal comfort achieved by least energy consumption, so that a residence satisfies the citizens' needs for health and wellness.…”

“…As the city grew, urbanisation, exponential urban population growth, advancement in technology and quest for modern lifestyle increased the proliferation of number of residential buildings of different kinds, sizes and sophistication without regards to acoustic criteria within and around Awka, the capital of Anambra State. The results therefore, are physical, mental and emotional discomfort of the occupants, high energy cost, environmental damage, poor indoor air quality, and unsustainable construction [1].…”
