Educational Robotics for Developing Computational Thinking in Young Learners: A Systematic Review

Abstract: Educational robotics has been adopted to create interactive and engaging learning environments to develop computational thinking (CT) in K-12 learners. This study systematically examined 22 peer-reviewed empirical research articles on the use of educational robotics to develop CT in young learners (pre-kindergarten to 6th grade) published between 2012 and 2021. The findings revealed that using robotics activities to develop CT has mostly been studied in the formal education settings with the duration of roboti… Show more

“…In this context, the term 'robot' encompasses many robotic systems, including articulated, mobile, autonomous, and vehicles of varying scales. The level of rigor in pursuing these objectives can be adjusted to align with the educational stage of implementation, spanning from early childhood, primary, middle, and high school levels to university education and the diverse range of postgraduate programs focusing on educational robotics (Ching & Hsu, 2023;Michaelis & Mutlu, 2019). Furthermore, educational robotics enables the instruction of essential subjects and scientific principles, including computer programming, artificial intelligence, and mechanics.…”

“…Teachers can utilize technology, such as interactive or applicative learning software (Jones et al, 2021), to increase student interaction and engagement. Projectbased and collaborative learning approaches can also be utilized (Ching & Hsu, 2023), where students can work in groups or teams to achieve learning objectives. Problembased learning, differentiation, and use of local resources are also innovations that can be applied in implementing Merdeka Curriculum (da Silva, 2023; Imron, 2023).…”

“…No entanto, esta RSL foi aplicada nos anos de 2013 e 2017 e não apresenta estudos atuais sobre o tema. Já o trabalho de [Ching and Hsu 2023], realizado em 2023, focou no uso de robótica educacional para desenvolver o PC em jovens alunos de até onze anos de idade. No trabalho de [Teixeira et al 2020] foi realizado um mapeamento sistemático da aplicac ¸ão de AC com Suporte Computacional (CSCL) em ambientes organizacionais.…”
