Abstract: ABSTRACT. Abiotic variables and phytoplankton effects on zooplanktonic community from a reservoir in northeast Brazil. Zooplankton from Mundaú reservoir, State of Pernambuco, northeast Brazil was studied concerning temporal (hours and seasonal period) and spatial (pelagic and coastal regions in different depths) variabilities, correlating them to the environmental variables and the phytoplankton. Twenty-three infrageneric and five subgeneric zooplankton taxa were observed. On the whole, Rotifera was the domina… Show more

“…These relationships explain the sequence of species replacement observed in dams of semi-arid regions in Paraiba state, where, during the beginning of the rainy season, M. minuta is the first species to colonize the environment, followed by C. cornuta and, finally, D. spinulosum. In fact, soon after the beginning of the first rains, an increase in phytoplankton primary productivity takes place (Dantas, 2009), due to Regarding C. cornuta populations, this species shows a peak of density in the dam at prevailing oligotrophic to mesotrophic conditions, and this observation is supported by our experimental results. Similar observations were made by Ferrão-Filho et al (2005) and Conde-Porcuna et al (2002), which stated that Ceriodaphnia species grow better under moderate trophic conditions.…”

“…In Brazil, studies on phytoplankton in short sampling intervals (24 hours cycle) have been carried out with his approach (Araújo et al, 2000;Barbosa, 2002;Melo and Huszar, 2000;Nabout and Nogueira, 2007;Becker et al, 2009;Barbosa et al, 2011;Cunha and Calijuri, 2011;Cruz, 2011;Dantas et al, 2009;Dantas et al, 2011). Natural coastal lagoons in Rio Grande do Norte systems are important, especially when using as water supply for the city of Natal, as in Extremoz Lake (Raposo and Gurgel, 2003).…”
