Objective: Patients using a removable prosthesis are susceptible to a variety of oral lesions that may progress to cancer. Toluidine blue (TB) staining is used to identify premalignant lesions, but the results are still controversial. Since micronuclei (MN) are a biomarker of genetic instability, the objective of this study was to determine the frequency of MN in white lesions of the oral mucosa and to compare the results with those of the TB test. Study Design: The study included 20 removable prosthesis users with white lesions that were previously classified as toluidine positive or negative. The frequency of MN was evaluated in exfoliated cells from lesions and normal mucosa. Nuclear anomalies were also registered. Results: A significant increase (p < 0.05) in the frequency of MN was observed in exfoliated cells from lesions compared to normal mucosal cells, and no relationship was seen with TB staining. Lifestyle factors or gender did not influence the results. Conclusions: The frequency of MN is a sensitive biomarker and can be used to predict genomic instability in white oral lesions. The MN assay may serve as a good parameter in the battery of tests used to identify high-risk individuals, contributing to the identification of the biological conditions of oral lesions.

RESUMO:O abuso no consumo de drogas tem sido considerado um grave problema de saúde pública, já que os usuários mudam seu comportamento e se descuidam da saúde geral e bucal. Desta forma, o sistema estomatognático dos usuários de drogas apresenta diversas lesões causadas por essas substâncias químicas. Este estudo tem por objetivo demonstrar as manifestações orais consequentes do uso abusivo de drogas ilícitas por meio de uma revisão literatura narrativa, afim de mostrar a importância do cirurgião-dentista na equipe multidisciplinar de tratamento desses indivíduos. Ao término desta revisão foi possível evidenciar alterações bucais como: redução do fluxo salivar, cárie e doença periodontal. PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Dependentes químicos. Saúde bucal. Alterações bucais em dependentes químicos.ABSTRACT: Drug abuse has been considered a serious public health problem, as users change their behavior and neglect general and oral health. In this way, the stomatognathic system of drug users presents diverse lesions caused by these chemical substances. This study aims to demonstrate the consequent oral manifestations of abusive use of illicit drugs through a narrative literature review, in order to show the importance of the dental surgeon in the multidisciplinary team of treatment of these individuals. At the end of this review it was possible to show that oral alterations such as: reduction of salivary flow, caries and periodontal disease are some of the main oral aspects present in illicit drug users.

Micronuclei and nuclear anomalies in Mexico’s indigenous population

Objective. To determine the number of micronuclei and nuclear anomalies in Mexico's indigenous population. Materials and methods. One hundred twenty indigenous individuals were evaluated, including thirty from the ethnicities Cora, Huichol, Tarahumara and Tepehuano. The number of micronuclei (MN) and any nuclear abnormality (NA) in oral mucosa cells, including cells with nuclear buds, binucleated cells, cells with karyolysis, karyorrhetic, condensed chromatin and pyknotic cells were determined for each participant. Results. Tepehuano and Tarahumaras showed the greatest damage to DNA. The Tepehuano group presented the highest number of MN and NA, this being a significant difference (p < 0.05) compared with the rest of the studied groups. This group also presented the highest herbicide exposure (46.7%). In relation to the smoking and drinking habits, these were more frequent in the Tarahumara group (33.3 and 50% respectively). Conclusion. The ethnic diversity, habits and customs may influence the DNA nuclear integrity in the Amerindian groups. https://doi.org/10.21149/8318Resumen Objetivo. Determinar el número de micronúcleos y anomalías nucleares en la población indígena de México. Material y métodos. Se evaluó a ciento veinte indígenas, incluyendo treinta individuos de las etnias cora, huichol, tarahumara y tepehuana. A cada participante se le determinó el número de micronúcleos (MN) y de alguna anomalía nuclear (AN) en células de mucosa bucal, incluyendo células con brotes nucleares, binucleadas, cariolisis, cariorrexis, cromatina condensada y picnóticas. Resultados. Los tepehuanos y tarahumaras mostraron el mayor daño al ADN. El grupo tepehuano presentó el mayor número de MN y AN, con una diferencia significativa (p < 0.05) en comparación con el resto de los grupos estudiados; este grupo presentó también la mayor exposición a herbicidas (46.7%). En relación con los hábitos de fumar y beber, se presentaron con mayor frecuencia en el grupo tarahumara (33.3 y 50%, respectivamente). Conclusión. La diversidad étnica, hábitos y costumbres pueden influir la integridad del ADN en los grupos amerindios.
