Drought associated with soil acidity and exchangeable Al3+ in depth are one of the main limiting factors in agricultural production in Northeast Brazil. Acidity correctives such as limestone, metallurgy slag, and gypsum are alternatives to minimize the effects of seasonal droughts on the crop. A field study was carried out to evaluate the effect of the slag and gypsum on the morphological aspects and productivity of sugarcane during two crop cycles. A randomized block design in subdivided plots scheme with four replications was used. The plot consisted of five rows of 10 m length each, spaced 1 m from each other. Treatments consisted of five levels of metallurgy slag (0; 1; 2; 3 and 4 Mg ha-1) and two levels of gypsum (0 and 1.9 Mg ha-1). Slag and gypsum had no effect on sugarcane plant yield. However, regarding sugarcane ratoon, slag increased the yield per hectare by 1.96 Mg ha-1 and sugar yield by 0.33 Mg ha-1 per Mg of applied slag. Slag and gypsum provided better biomass allocation to the root system and improved root distribution along the soil profile.

RESUMOA variabilidade na acumulação de silício entre cultivares de cana-de-açúcar pode estar associada à produtividade e incidência da broca-da-cana-de-açúcar, Diatraea saccharalis, mas são escassas as informações sobre o tema. Assim, o objetivo foi avaliar a absorção de Si pelas folhas diagnósticas e acúmulo na parte aérea e sua relação com produtividade, qualidade e infestação da broca-da-cana-de-açúcar em cultivares de cana-de-açúcar. O experimento foi desenvolvido em Tietê (SP), no período de março de 2007 a julho de 2008, em blocos casualizados com quatro repetições e nove cultivares (IAC 86 2480, IAC 91 1099, IAC 87 3396, IACSP 94 4004, IACSP 93 6006, IACSP 93 3046, IACSP 94 2094, IACSP 94 2101. A produtividade aos 16 meses foi superior a 100 t ha -1 , sendo maior para IAC 91-1099 e RB 86-7515, com maior altura e diâmetro respectivamente. A cultivar IAC 91-1099 propiciou maior teor de açúcares e menor de fibra. Não houve diferença no Si das folhas aos seis meses e, aos oito meses, 'IACSP 93-3046', 'IACSP 93-6006' e 'IAC 91-1099' proporcionaram maiores valores, superiores a 10 g kg -1 de Si. Maiores acúmulos de Si nas folhas foram verificados em 'IAC 91-1099' aos 10, 14 e 16 meses e, no colmo, para 'RB 86-7515' e 'IAC 91-1099' aos 10 e 12 meses. A análise das folhas diagnósticas aos seis meses e da planta inteira colhida aos 16 meses foi eficiente para caracterizar as diferenças na absorção de silício entre as cultivares. Não houve relação entre Si absorvido e produtividade e infestação da broca, que foi reduzida com o aumento do teor de fibra das cultivares.Palavras-chave: produção; nutrição; solo; broca-da-cana-de-açúcar. ABSTRACT SILICON UPTAKE, YIELD AND DIATRAEA SACCHARALIS INCIDENCE IN SUGARCANE CULTIVARSThe variability of silicon absorption in sugarcane cultivars can be associate with its yield and sugarcane borer (D. saccharalis) incidence. The objective of this work was to evaluate silicon uptake by the leaves and accumulation in total aerial plant and its relationship to yield, quality and stalk borer in sugarcane cultivars. The experiment was carried out at Tietê, SP during March 2007 to July 2008, randomized complete blocks design with four replications and nine cultivars (IAC 86-2480, IAC 91-1099, IAC 87-3396, IACSP 94-4004, IACSP 93-6006, IACSP-93-3046, IACSP-94-2094, IACSP 94-2101. Yields were superior to 100 t ha -1 at 16 months of age and IAC 91-1099 and RB 86 7515 cultivars showed the highest diameter and height, respectively. The IAC 91-1099 showed the highest values of sugar and lowest to fiber content. Silicon content in leaves collected at 6 months showed not significant differences. The IACSP 93-3046, IACSP 93-6006 and IAC 91-1099 showed the highest silicon content in the leaves at 8 months and they were superior to 10 g kg -1 Si. Selection index using the graphical area applied to sugarcane breeding

ABSTRACT. This study aimed to develop a multivariate selection index based on the graphical area of a polygon formed by standardized values, also known as radar chart. This methodology may be used to assist selection of superior genotypes in sugarcane breeding programs. Seven technological traits in 37 sugarcane genotypes were evaluated. An area index (AI) was constructed and the resulting polygon areas were used to rank genotypes under selection. In this study, we propose the use of restricted maximum likelihood to estimate genetic parameters and mixed model equations to predict genotypic and breeding values. The area of each polygon was calculated for phenotypic, genotypic, and estimated breeding values. Thereby, the genotypes with larger area can be selected based on a detailed a posteriori evaluation of the radar charts. The proposed AI can be adjusted based on the breeders' specific interests, it is perfectly useful in other crops, and may also be applied to studies on genotype-environment interactions. Moreover, AI is a powerful tool that can evaluate trait stability of genotypes based on slight differences in the area formed by each genotype. Hence, this method is easy to apply and shows great potential for use in sugarcane breeding programs as well as in other breeding programs.
