Background: There has been an exponential growth in the use of advanced technologies for three-dimensional (3D) virtual pre- and intra-operative planning of pelvic ring injury surgery but potential benefits remain unclear. The purpose of this study was to evaluate differences in intra- and post-operative results between 3D and conventional (2D) surgery. Methods: A systematic review was performed including published studies between 1 January 2010 and 22 May 2020 on all available 3D techniques in pelvic ring injury surgery. Studies were assessed for their methodological quality according to the Modified McMaster Critical Review form. Differences in operation time, blood loss, fluoroscopy time, screw malposition rate, fracture reduction and functional outcome between 3D-assisted and conventional (2D) pelvic injury treatment were evaluated and a best-evidence synthesis was performed. Results: Eighteen studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria, evaluating a total of 988 patients. Overall quality was moderate. Regarding intra-operative results of 3D-assisted versus conventional surgery: The weighted mean operation time per screw was 43 min versus 52 min; for overall operation time 126 min versus 141 min; blood loss 275 ± 197 mL versus 549 ± 404 mL; fluoroscopy time 74 s versus 125 s and fluoroscopy frequency 29 ± 4 versus 63 ± 3. In terms of post-operative outcomes of 3D-assisted versus conventional surgery: weighted mean screw malposition rate was 8% versus 18%; quality of fracture reduction measured by the total excellent/good rate by Matta was 86% versus 82% and Majeed excellent/good rate 88% versus 83%. Conclusion: The 3D-assisted surgery technologies seem to have a positive effect on operation time, blood loss, fluoroscopy dose, time and frequency as well as accuracy of screw placement. No improvement in clinical outcome in terms of fracture reduction and functional outcome has been established so far. Due to a wide range of methodological quality and heterogeneity between the included studies, results should be interpreted with caution.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) rapidly spread to over 180 countries and abruptly disrupted production rates and supply chains worldwide. Since then, 3D printing, also recognized as additive manufacturing (AM) and known to be a novel technique that uses layer-by-layer deposition of material to produce intricate 3D geometry, has been engaged in reducing the distress caused by the outbreak. During the early stages of this pandemic, shortages of personal protective equipment (PPE), including facemasks, shields, respirators, and other medical gear, were significantly answered by remotely 3D printing them. Amidst the growing testing requirements, 3D printing emerged as a potential and fast solution as a manufacturing process to meet production needs due to its flexibility, reliability, and rapid response capabilities. In the recent past, some other medical applications that have gained prominence in the scientific community include 3D-printed ventilator splitters, device components, and patient-specific products. Regarding non-medical applications, researchers have successfully developed contact-free devices to address the sanitary crisis in public places. This work aims to systematically review the applications of 3D printing or AM techniques that have been involved in producing various critical products essential to limit this deadly pandemic’s progression.

Pada era revolusi industri 4.0, teknologi cetak tiga dimensi (3D printing) sedang berkembang pesat. Di Taiwan dan Korea Selatan, siswa sekolah menengah telah memiliki kemampuan menjalankan 3D printing. Sebaliknya di Indonesia, lulusan sekolah menengah be-lum memiliki kompetensi sejenis. Oleh sebab itu, tim Pengabdian Masyarakat dari departemen Teknik Mesin ITS memberikan pengenalan dasar teknologi cetak 3D untuk meningkatkan kompetensi siswa sekolah mene-ngah. Pelatihan ini diberikan secara singkat kepada 29 siswa SMAN 1 Boyolangu, Tulungagung dengan persen-tase 25% berupa pemberian teori dasar dan 75% berupa praktik mengerjakan proses 3D modelling-scanning-printing. Berdasarkan analisis kuantitatif, pemahaman peserta meningkat sebesar 35.05% untuk materi 3D modelling dan 22.55% untuk materi 3D scanning dan printing. Adapun berdasarkan analisis kualitatif, hasil pencetakan produk 3D dengan metode 3D printing yang dikerjakan oleh peserta sudah cukup bagus. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa kegiatan pelatihan singkat selama dua hari mampu meningkatkan kompetensi siswa SMA dalam memahami dasar teknologi manufaktur 3D printing.
