“…It is worth mentioning that the stimulation of estrogen synthesis in our OVX animals agreed with the previous studies when the OVX rats were treated with other phytoestrogens. 13,29 Under physiological conditions, the biological effects of estrogen depend not only on the level of estrogen but also on the distribution and expression levels of the corresponding ERs, ERa and ERb, in the target cell [30][31][32] Estrogen and ERs are involved in the physiological function regulation of the female reproductive system. In this study, QBMR significantly up-regulated the expression of ERa and ERb in protein and gene levels in the target tissues, respectively.…”

“…Previous pharmacological results suggested that DBT displays an estrogen-like activity on receptor phosphorylation without proliferating mammary gland cells [13], in addition to multiple abilities to promote hematopoietic function [14, 15], to prevent osteoporosis [16], and to stimulate immune response [17, 18]. Interestingly, our previous study on an ovariectomized model revealed that a herbal recipe (named RRF) derived from DBT, which includes Radix Astragali, Radix Angelicae Sinensis, and Folium Epimedii (leaves of Epimedium brevicornum Maxim, Berberidaceae), had a potential efficacy on both estrogen regulation and bone formation promotion [19], in which RRF exhibited the abilities to relieve the dramatic sexual hormonal unbalance of estradiol (E 2 ), lutenizing hormone (LH), and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and to restore the bone mineral density (BMD). All these findings strongly indicated the potential of RRF on prevention and treatment of women's perimenopausal symptoms.…”

“…The most popular formulation is Danggui Buxue Tang (DBT) composed of Astragalus and Angelica at a 5 : 1 ratio, which is mainly used to treat anemia due to various causes via promoting hematopoiesis. 1) In recent years, studies have shown that DBT also has other pharmacological effects, such as enhancing immunity, 2) antagonizing diabetic nephropathy, 3) cardiovascular protection, 4) anti-fibrosis, 5,6) estrogen-like effect, 7,8) among others. Concerning the hematopoietic function of the AstragalusAngelica combination, most studies have revealed that Astragalus mixed with Angelica at 5 : 1 can strongly promote hematopoiesis.…”
