Effect of a Long-Term Corrective Exercises With Using Brace on Cobb Angle and Postural Control of a Girl With Adolescence Idiopathic Scoliosis

Abstract: Purpose: Scoliosis is a three-dimensional deformity of the spine in which the resulting imbalance accompanied by the changes in muscle and nervous components can harm the postural control. Various treatments have been suggested so far to correct scoliosis, in which using corrective exercises along with brace are essential to limit the growing curvature, improve spine stability and postural control, and reduce the degree of curvature. Methods: Our case was a 14-year-old girl who had a 40-degree thoracic curve (… Show more

“…In general, researchers have recommended the use of Corrective Exercises (CE), brace with CEs, and surgery for deflections of 10-25, 25-45, and above 45 degrees, respectively [12]. The side effects of surgery and the fear created in the person with scoliosis caused the use of a brace and CEs [13,14], which are the most widely used non-invasive method among researchers, families, and patients [15]. However, prolonged administration of brace without CEs causes a weakness in the muscle groups of the spine [11,16].…”

“…Conversely, wearing braces for a long time without exercise causes muscle weakness, rigidity, development of a flat back, and even the adolescents’ unwillingness to continue the treatment process ( 9 ). Consequently, corrective exercises are the primary and most suitable choice before alternative methods for remedying AIS ( 1 , 10 , 11 ). Meanwhile, Schroth exercises (SE) (among scoliosis-specific exercises) ( 7 ) and core-stabilization exercises (CE) (among general exercises) ( 1 ) have become more prominent than other exercise methods due to their promising results ( 1 , 7 ).…”

“…The importance of the correction process comes from parents' and teenagers' tendency to lean towards conservative approaches, e.g. the use of physical exercises, when engaged in correcting LS problems [9]. It should be emphasized here that this approach is certainly effective in combination with other methods of correction, in particular with therapeutic swimming.…”
