Effect of Activating Agent on the Preparation of Bamboo-Based High Surface Area Activated Carbon by Microwave Heating

Abstract: The present work attempts to convert bamboo into a high surface area activated carbon via microwave heating. Different chemical activating agents such as KOH, NaOH, K 2 CO 3 and Na 2 CO 3 were utilized to identify a most suitable activating agent. Among the activating agents tested KOH was found to generate carbon with the highest porosity and surface area. The effect of KOH/C ratio on the porous nature of the activated carbon has been assessed. An optimal KOH/C ratio of 4 was identified, beyond which the surf… Show more

“…e pores on the surface could be macropores which lead to the branching micropores in the interiors of the activated carbon [25]. Figure 1(b) shows the changes in some parts of the surface particles with native biosorbent which depicts that Pb (II) ion has deposited as aggregates in the AASAC1.…”

“…e percentage of metal sorbed increases with an increase in adsorbent dose for the heavy metals [37]. Since the quantity of metal ion is constant, an increase in the amount of adsorbent above a quantity that can completely adsorb the available metal ion had no apparent effect on a further increase of percent adsorption [25]. e percentage removals of metal increase rapidly with an increase in the dose of the adsorbents due to the greater availability of the exchangeable sites or surface area [38].…”

“…Based on the fact that the activating agents potassium hydroxide (KOH) performed much better than the other activating agent in terms of its ability to produce very high surface area carbon. KOH was found to generate carbon with the highest porosity and surface area [14]. A number of studies have been carried out to using KOH as an activating agent.…”
