Effect of Acute Hypoxia on Maximal Exercise in Trained and Sedentary Women

Abstract: These results demonstrate that endurance-trained women show a greater decrement in VO(2max) at high altitudes. This could be explained mainly by a higher arterial desaturation, which is largely caused, according to our results, by diffusion limitation.

“…However, this hypothesis is controversial (Brooks 1991;Katz and Sahlin 1988). A more relevant hypothesis could be that the relative exercise intensity was greater during VH 0.21 than NB 0.21 since _ VO 2max decreases in the presence of arterial O 2 desaturation, especially in trained subjects (Bourdillon et al 2009a;Mollard et al 2007;Woorons et al 2005). Anyway, irrespective of the reasons leading to a greater metabolic acidosis during exercise with VH, this phenomenon is interesting since it reflects a higher solicitation of anaerobic glycolysis.…”

“…Oxygen saturation (SaO 2 ) was estimated by an ear oximeter (Nonin, 8000Q, Plymouth, Minn, USA) at sea level and at an altitude of 3,900 m after 10 min of quiet sitting (Cymerman et al 1989;Woorons et al 2005). For technical reasons, SaO 2 was not measured at the summit.…”
