Effect of Adding Resveratrol to Soybean-Lecithin Extender on Some Semen Attributes of Buffalo Bulls

A. M. Alhelal,
T. A. Abdulkareem

Abstract: This study was conducted to explain the effect of adding different resveratrol (Res) concentrations to soybean-lecithin extender on some post-cryopreserved (PC) semen characteristics of the Iraqi buffalo bulls for different preservation periods. Eight mature bulls were used, and polled semen was equally divided into four groups within one trial. Three Res concentrations (100, 150, and 200 μM) were added to the soybean-lecithin extender, and comparisons in the response were made with the control group (soybean-… Show more

“…Calcium is a crucial factor for sperm motility and fertility of the bulls [18,38]. Further, the reasons behind non-significant differences in EV, SC, TMS, TPMI, TAI, TFSF and TNS between GS and PS groups may be attributed to the similar ages of the experimental animals, and being of the same breed, which was subjected to the similar management and nutritional conditions [39].…”

“…Sperm cryopreservation has contributed to reducing the obstacles and factors that make it hard to obtain semen, such as the geographical location and the time factor [4]. The semen of buffalo bulls is high in unsaturated fatty acids and contains a few antioxidants [5,6] compared to cow bulls [7,8]. Therefore, the semen of buffaloes is more susceptible to lipid oxidative damage by reactive oxygen species (ROS), which leads to an increase in the percentage of abnormalities, damage to the genetic material, and a decrease in fertility [9,10].…”

“…The semen of buffalo bulls is high in unsaturated fatty acids and contains a few antioxidants [5,6] compared to the Holstein bulls [7,8,9]. Therefore, the semen of buffaloes is more susceptible to lipid oxidative damage by free radicles of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which leads to an increase in the percentage of abnormalities, damage to the genetic material, and a decrease in fertility [10,11]. In semen, free radicles or ROS are generated by leukocytes, dead, abnormal, and immature spermatozoa.…”

“…Semen is affected by many factors, including genetics, age, stress, nutrition, management, diseases, care, transportation, vaccination, and others [3,9,10,11,12,13]. There is a strong relationship between male fertility and semen characteristics fresh of buffalo bulls [14,15,16] and bovine bulls [17,18]. The sperm separation techniques significantly improved semen quality (good sperm with progressive motility and normal morphology) in in vitro fertilization (IVF).…”
