Effect of Age and Plane of Nutrition on the Blood Chemistry of the Columbian Black-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus Hemionus Columbianus): A. Packed-Cell Volume, Sedimentation Rate, and Hemoglobin

Abstract: H study has bcen made of the normal chemistry of thc bloocl constitlrents of the Columbian blaclc-tailetl decr (Odocoilc~rs lzcnsio?sz~s colz~trrbia~~z~s) in relation to growth and the caloric plane of nutrition. The rcsults sho\vetl a signilicant difference of paclcctl-cell volume ant1 hemoglobin level between the two age groups of experimental animals, while no signilicant tlifierences were found in thc sedimentation rates. “…The low ESR values for the reindeer calves are similar to those reported for white-tailed deer (White & Cook 1974) and mule deer calves (Kitts et al 1956). The ESR of the adult hinds varies from 3 to 22 mm/hour (Dieterich & Luick 1971).…”

“…For example, it has been demonstrated that some changes in blood values may be more closely correlated with seasonal reproductive cycles than with temperatures . (Kitts et al 1956). In this connection, Tabor and Domm ( 1946) present evidence that in the domestic fowl androgens stimulate erythropoietic activity of the bone marrow while estrogens interfere with red blood cell production.…”

“…The primary objective of the worli reported earlier (5) and of the present stucly was to establish basic blood parameters for black-tailed deer in relation to normal growth. T o permit the illterpretatio~l of the normal, an equal number of animals was reared under coilditioils of restricted growth induced by reduced caloric intake.…”
