Effect of Age on Strength of Unfired Soil Lime Bricks Containing Non Uniform Coconut Fibers

Abstract: In some provinces in Indonesia, like West Java, fired clay and unfired soil lime bricks co-exist as non standard bricks. Low rise buildings and rural houses in Indonesia are often constructed with non-standard bricks. The paper discusses strength-time relation of unfired bricks reinforced with and without natural fibers. Untreated and treated coconut fibers with three different lengths (1 cm, 2.5 cm and 4 cm) were prepared for bricks reinforcements. The effects of 4% non-uniform fiber addition, which constitut… Show more

“…Compressive and bending strength of early ages unfired bricks containing uniform untreated fibers are in general higher that those containing non uniform untreated fibers [7]. 4% non uniform length of coconut fibers addition to the same mixture have been studied in accordance with bricks ages of 14, 28, 56, and 90 days [8]. Another study [9] with the same mixture but with an addition of 4% uniform length of coir has been studied in accordance to those same bricks ages.…”

“…From those two mixes, the mix design with the lower proportion of lime is used in this study. The effect of ages to the addition of non uniform coconut fibers to the mixture of lime, soil and water have been studied in accordance with bricks ages of 14, 28, 56 and 90 days [7]. A non-uniform fiber addition constituting of 1/3 part each of 1 cm, 2.5 cm and 4 cm fiber length has been used in the study.…”

“…The effect of ages to the addition of uniform 2.5 cm coconut fibers to the same soil lime mixture will be studied in accordance to those same bricks ages. The 2.5 cm uniform fiber length is taken for the study as it represents the average of 1 cm, 2.5 cm and 4 cm fiber length used in the previous study [7]. In turn the previous study [7] and this study will give insight of the effect of coir uniformity to the strength of unfired soil lime bricks on different ages.…”
