Effect of Al on the microstructure, corrosion behavior and mechanical properties of Mg-4Li

Abstract: Purpose This paper aims to investigate microstructure, corrosion behavior and mechanical properties of Mg-4Li and Mg-4Li-3Al. Design/methodology/approach The microstructure was characterized by using scanning electron microscopy and electron backscatter diffraction. The corrosion behaviors were measured by hydrogen evolution and potentiodynamic polarization tests. The mechanical properties were evaluated by tensile tests. Findings The addition of Al results in the precipitation of some Mg-Al phase and Al3L… Show more

“…As a promising rare earth element (RE), Ce and Nd have been applied in alloying materials to enhance their corrosion resistance without destroying mechanical properties (Li et al , 2020; Dutta et al , 2020; Lu et al , 2018; Zhang et al , 2019). Nevertheless, there are few reports on the incorporation of cerium and neodymium ions into the plating solution to obtain excellent corrosion resistance through the deposition process.…”

“…The existing refinement methods of Mg-Al alloys mainly include carbon inoculation method, superheating method, anhydrous FeCl 3 method, deformation treatment method, alloying method, etc [9][10][11]. The addition of Fe element in the anhydrous FeCl 3 method reduces the corrosion resistance of the alloys, so it is not widely used in industrial applications [12]. Due to the high temperature involved in the superheating treatment, the Fe content in the melt increases, the liquid Mg oxidizes, and the suction becomes severe.…”
