Effect of alkaline and ozone pretreatment on sludge reduction potential of a membrane bioreactor treating high-strength domestic wastewater

Abstract: A B S T R A C TThe wide application and utilization of the activated sludge process has resulted in the production of excess sludge, posing a serious disposal problem. Many efforts have been dedicated to reduce the excess sludge by treatments such as digestion and dewatering. In this study, an aerobic submerged membrane bioreactor (MBR) was used to study the effect of alkaline and ozone pretreatment on the efficiency of sludge reduction. For this purpose, two MBRs were fabricated. Among the two MBRs, one acted… Show more

“…Several other studies have also been conducted to increase the efficiency for the using of ozone. These studies include, ozone can react in alkaline solutions (O3 + OH • ) (M. Suresh Karthik Kumar et al, 2014), photolysis reactions with ozone (O3 / UV) (Martynas Tichonovas et al, 2017), perozone (O3 + H2O2) (Tap Van Huu and Tuyen Trinh Van, 2015), and catalytic ozonation (Jianlong Wang and Hai Chen, 2020) are the basics for the development of ozone technology as a promising process for the sewage treatment industry that produced from the reduction of air pollution process.…”
