Effect of alloying elements on magnesium alloy damping capacities at room temperature

Abstract: Alloying is a good approach to increasing its strength but leads to a reduction of damping to pure magnesium. Classifying the alloying characteristics of various alloying elements in magnesium alloys and their combined effects on the damping and mechanical properties of magnesium alloys is important. In this paper, the properties of the Mg-0.6wt%X binary alloys were analyzed through strength measurements and dynamic mechanical analysis. The effects of foreign atoms on solid-solution strengthening and dislocati… Show more

“…Magnesium alloys emerged as a promising candidate for lightweight structural materials [1][2][3][4] in engineering applications due to their low density [5], high specific strength [6], good damping [7,8] and electromagnetic shielding [9,10]. The magnesium alloys have the potential for wide application fields such as aerospace, automotive, and telecommunications [11][12][13].…”

“…Magnesium alloys are well known for their high vibration-damping capacity compared to other alloys. They have been highly regarded as materials that can protect products from external vibrations and reduce noise in the fields of electronic devices and transportation [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]. However, commercial magnesium materials are generally alloyed with various additive elements, such as Al or Ca, to improve their strength and mechanical properties.…”

“…9,10 In addition, magnesium alloys have better damping, good flowability, and higher machinability. 11,12 Mg-based and its alloys are incongruous to be used for bearings, pistons, and cylinder applications due to their low shear strength. 1315 AZ91 Magnesium alloys were used mostly due to their good castability, high specific strength, and better corrosion resistance.…”
