Effect of an Anabolic Steroid (Metandienon) on Plasma Lh, Fsh, and Testosterone and on the Response to Intravenous Administration of LRH

Abstract: Plasma levels of testosterone, luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle\x=req-\ stimulating hormone (FSH) as well as the response of LH and FSH to the intravenous administration of 100 \g=m\g of luteinizing hormone releasing hormone (LRH) were measured in 16 well-trained athletes (mean age 30 years) before and after 2 months of daily oral intake of 15 mg of metandienon, an anabolic steroid (Anabolin\s=r\,17\g=a\-methyl-17\g=b\-hydroxy\x=req-\ 1,4-androstadien-3-one, Medica, Finland). All athletes continued to tra… Show more

“…Following the cessation of administration of ABS or TES, recovery from the effects of administered ABS or TES occurs in about 90 days (Squires et al, 1981). Studies in men have also shown a reduction in plasma TES following the administration of ABS Kilshaw et al, 1975;Holma & Adlercreutz, 1976;Clerico et al, 1981).…”

“…The steep lowering of the levels of testosterone is in accordance with the effect of other anabolic steroids (Holma & Adlercreutz 1976;Remes et al 1977) and reflects an inhibitory effect on testicular testosterone secretion. Androstenedione is prima¬ rily of adrenal origin, but up to one third is derived from peripheral conversion of testosterone (van Kämmen et al 1977).…”

“…mals (15,18). Moreover, steroid treatment has been shown to be followed by a reduction of the endogenous testosterone (1) concentration (1,3,11,12,17,21,(23)(24)(25) and less consistently of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and interstitial cell-stimulating hormone (ICSH) (1,3,12,17,21,23,25). In our study, we investigated in a cross double-blind experiment the effects of an anabolic steroid (stanozolol), at therapeutic doses, on the anaerobic threshold and on the maximal velocity in runners.…”
