“…Antimicrobial stewardship programs have been shown to be beneficial in numerous health care settings, from small community health care centers to nursing homes and academic urban hospitals (13,14). Reported benefits include, but are not limited to (15), reduction of C. difficile infection incidence (16)(17)(18)(19), reduction of antimicrobial resistance (20)(21)(22)(23)(24), improving antimicrobial dosing in renally impaired patients (25,26), improving the use of surgical antimicrobial prophylaxis (27)(28)(29), improved infection cure rates (30,31), decreased mortality rates (14), more rapid administration of effective antimicrobial therapy and appropriate de-escalation in critical infections (32)(33)(34)(35), and hospital cost savings (36)(37)(38)(39)(40)(41).…”

“…The leading cause of CDI is antibiotic treatment, most likely leading to severe alterations in the intestinal microbiome. There have been multiple studies showing that antibiotic stewardship (ABS) programs can reduce CDI rates [ 66 ]. The main targets for modifying antibiotic prescription habits are often the prophylactic antibiotic schemes.…”

“…Antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASPs) have an essential role in improving patient outcomes, reducing antimicrobial adverse events, decreasing antimicrobial resistance, and optimizing resource utilization. [1][2][3][4][5] The Joint Commission Antimicrobial Stewardship Standard for hospitals mandates establishing an ASP as an organizational priority. 6 Dedicated medical and pharmacy staff with antimicrobial expertise are critical for ASP success.…”
