Effect of an essential oilcontaining antiseptic mouthrinse on plaque and salivary Streptococcus mutans levels

Abstract: As antimicrobial mouthrinses are most frequently recommended to patients whose mechanical oral hygiene procedures are not adequate for the control of supragingival plaque and gingivitis, this study provides an additional rationale for the inclusion of the essential-oil mouthrinse as an adjunct to daily oral hygiene procedures.

“…Our results suggest that LSEO, thymol and carvacrol have antibacterial activity against S. mutans, one of the most important cariogenic bacteria which leads to demineralization of dental enamel (1,11), and may be useful for maintaining oral hygiene by reducing bacterial growth. Nevertheless, further studies are needed to identify and purify other active LSEO ingredients for future use in trials using toothpaste and mouth rinse formulations.…”

“…Although antibiotics are used routinely to prevent systemic infections originating from the oral cavity, they are not recommended for regular prevention of dental plaque formation because of the risk that bacteria will develop resistance to them. During the last decade, extracts or oils of medicinal plants with antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity have been used for prevention of various oral infections (6)(7)(8). Moreover, in vitro inhibitory activity of extracts or oils from various medicinal plants such as garlic (9), Lippia sidoides (10), grapefruit seeds (11), and many others (12-15) against cariogenic and periodontopathic bacteria have been documented.…”

“…Although chlorhexidine is a well-known antiseptic for antiplaque action and has been used as an adjunct in conventional SRP for the treatment of periodontal infl ammatory conditions; its side-eff ects including extensive tooth staining, taste alteration, and calculus deposition limit patient compliance for its long-term use [7 ]. However, essential-oil mouthwashes have been shown to be useful in reducing periodontopathogenic microbes and in controlling plaque and gingivitis [8]. In a randomized placebo-controlled st udy, Cavalca Cortelli et al [9] investigated the clinical and microbiological long-term eff ects of an essential-oil-containing mouthwash as the active agent utilized in the treatment of periodontal infl ammation.…”
