Effect of antibrowning agents on fresh-cut potato tubers using frequency filtering of biospeckle images

Abstract: Our present work aims to study the physiological changes of chemically treated fresh-cut potato tubers and then to correlate such changes with the results of the non destructive and non invasive laser biospeckle technique. The effect of chemically treated (citric acid (CA-0.5% and 1.0%) and citric acid + sodium chloride (CS-0.5% and 1.0%)) fresh-cut potato tubers on physiological activities such as the respiration rate and weight loss at cold storage has been studied for eight consecutive days. In addition, bi… Show more

“…We took data for nine consecutive days. The experimental setup already published by our group (Minz et al [12]) was used in the present work. A 2 mW He-Ne laser with a wavelength of 632.8 nm was used to illuminate the sample.…”

“…Viable and non-viable seeds with different specific humidity levels could also be classified using the same technique [10]. The biospeckle activity (BA) of samples has been found using different intensity-based algorithms such as a co-occurrence matrix (COM) [11,12], generalized difference (GD) [13], Fujii [14] and parameterized Fujii [15]. Enes et al were able to differentiate bruises generated on papaya flesh at different stages of maturation using a GD method [16].…”

“…In a study with potato tubers fresh cutted, the authors concluded that the MI method with wavelet transform was able to evaluate several physiological activities of fruits and vegetables in a nondestructive way, and also that the biospeckle can be used to study different effects of chemicals on metabolic activity of fruits and vegetables [19].…”

“…Cardoso et al has presented a comprehensive study by applying wavelet transform of speckle images to isolate biological phenomena of maize and bean seeds [12]. Minz et al has used this approach to study the efficiency of chemical treatment on potato tubers [13]. Research work has been done on seeds and sperm space time speckle patterns using the wavelet transform [14].…”
