Effect of Artificial Valves on Intestinal Adaptation in the Short-Bowel Syndrome: An Integrated Study of Morphological and Functional Changes in Rats

Abstract: Two-third-resections of the proximal or distal small bowel with and without artificial valves were performed in rats. Intestinal adaptation led to a significant increase in bowel diameter, villus height and villus diameter and consequently in absorptive mucosal surface area per unit of serosal area. Additional artificial valve construction did not affect the calculated mucosal surface area after proximal resection, while it significantly decreased the absorptive area by the occurrence of large, plump villi aft… Show more

“…In abdominal surgery research in rats [1][2][3][4][5][6][7] it is helpful to evaluate the surface area of intestinal mucosa [8] caused by villous alterations [9]. Thereby it is possible to quantify histological adaptations that enlarge or reduce small intestinal surface.…”

“…Many experimental surgical methods such as artificial valves (26), anti-peristaltic segments (4), colon interposition (24), recirculating loops (1), intestinal patches (7), the Iowa model (14), and ªtissue engineeringº (10,11) have been introduced, but most of the methods have not shown sufficient improvement in the absorptive capacity of the remaining small bowel (17).…”

“…No segmento distal à segunda válvula foi de 8,5 ± 0,7mm. Houve diferença entre o pré e o pós-operatório de cada segmento, fisiopatologia e das opções de tratamento da SIC e da adaptação intestinal [20][21][22][23][24][25] . Ressaltando-se os cuidados na extrapolação dos achados, no presente trabalho optou-se pelo uso de ratos, animais de fácil criação e manejo.…”
