Effect of atmospheric-pressure plasma irradiation on the surface tension of water

Abstract: We have shown that measuring the surface tension is a useful scheme to examine the plasma-liquid interface in real-time. The surface tension was measured using a method based on the dispersion relation of an acoustic capillary wave excited on the water surface. The surface tension gradually increased with time, when the water surface was irradiated with the outside region of the spatial afterglow of an atmospheric-pressure plasma. The Marangoni effect associated with the localized increase in the surface tensi… Show more

“…The chemical composition changed by plasma and heating effect also change the surface tension coefficient γ, which is different from pure NaCl solutions. An experiment shows that atmospheric plasma jets increase the surface tension coefficient of water from 75 to over 100 mN m −1 [63], suggesting that gas-liquid can withstand a larger pressure difference of 33% at the same curvature.…”

“…More importantly, it proves the possibility that a plasma actuator can operate normally in an environment where rainwater exists. 31 Regarding the control of flow separation, SDBD has primarily been applied for separation flow suppression investigations on airfoils, wings and compressors. [32][33][34] However, few investigations have been conducted on the inside of S-shaped inlets.…”
