Effect of Azo Dyes on the Thermal Degradation of Post-consumer Polyester Fabrics

Abstract: Abstract. Thermogravimetric analysis(TGA) and pyrolysis gas chromatography mass spectrometry (Py-GC-MS) investigations were carried out on the thermal degradation of white and red post-consumer polyester fabrics. The results show that red PET fabrics which was dyed with C.I. Disperse red 167 for its typical azo structure exhibits larger activation energy compared with white PET. The addition of azo dyes displays an inhibiting effect on the deep pyrolysis and the formation of biphenyl and bis(2-hydroxybutyl) te… Show more

“…To further explore the composition of VOCs produced in screw melting which took a long time at high temperature in the industry environment, Thermogravimetry-mass spectrometry was used programming at sharply heating to 280 °C and then held for 90 min in a nitrogen atmosphere which was based on the thermal degradation mechanism analysis of PET [5]. VOCs from the degradation of PET popcorn and drawn fibers were also detected programming from 30 °C to 800 °C by 20 °C/min .…”

“…One of the attractive chemical recycling methods to regenerate PET is glycolysis reaction into the bis(2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate, and then obtained monomer BHET is used in the synthesis of polymeric materials [4]. Therefore the recycled PET manufactured with such recycling process is not considered of safety concerns for the non-intentionally added substances (NIAS) including volatile organic compounds (VOCs) as a result of reaction and degradation processes or the presence of impurities in the raw materials [5] used for the textile production.…”
