Effect of bandage contact lens wear and postoperative medical therapies on corneal healing rate after diamond burr debridement in dogs

Abstract: Postdebridement antibiotic type or use of sodium chloride ointment had minor effects on healing rates. Bandage contact lens use and retention significantly improves healing times.

“…who reported a retention rate of 95% over the study period. Our results are, however, in accordance with Dees who reported an overall retention of 35% for vl and 80% for the hl (both times using the identical contact lens models—‘AcriVet Pat D’ and ‘Pure Vision 2’‐ as in our study) . We speculate that the early loss of the vl might be caused by the higher rigidity, the greater thickness and larger diameter of the veterinary lens compared to the human lens.…”

“…Folding and entrapment of the lens between the globe and the third eyelid of a contact lens led to severe discomfort and keratoconjunctivitis in one of 12 eyes in our study. This has not yet been reported in previous studies . In the author's experience, this is an unusual event in daily clinical practice.…”

“…Ideally, the results of this pilot study would be replicated in a larger and broader clinical population. The majority of previous clinical studies involving contact lens therapy in dogs, even those assessing retention characteristics, did not compare retention rates and times of different lenses in the same dog or eye . However, the methods in this study ensured that the subjects and their environments were uniform, and thus allowed controlled comparison of a large number of BCL types (nine; with a tenth similar alternate lens substitution exception for three of the dogs) from four manufacturers, unlikely possible in a clinical patient or setting.…”

“…Contact lenses are used in the management of a variety of veterinary ophthalmic pathologies including for UV‐protection, drug administration, and occasionally altering refractive status . As they conveniently provide mechanical protection and enhance patient comfort, contact lenses are more commonly used as bandages for eyelid conditions, ulcerative keratitides or sequestrum management; or post interventions such as symblepharon release or cyanoacrylate placement . In spontaneous chronic corneal epithelial defect (SCCED) cases, BCL also reduce healing time; however, they must be retained long enough for patients to gain these benefits.…”
