Effect of bicarbonate and root zone temperature on uptake of Zn, Fe, Mn and Cu by different rice cultivars (Oryza sativa L.) grown in calcareous soil

Abstract: Pot e x p e r i m e n t s were c o n d u c t e d with a calcareous soil (Inceptisol) to elucidate the effects of bicarbonate (0 and 20 mM) and root zone temperature (15 ° and 25°C) on the uptake of Zn, Fe, Mn and Cu by "Zn-efficient" and "Zn-inefficient" rice cultivars. Bicarbonate decreased concentrations and total uptake of Zn in shoots of "Zn-inefficient" cultivars, especially of IR 26 at 25°C, but not in Zn-efficient cultivars. Bicarbonate decreased concentrations and uptake of Fe in shoots of Zn inefficie… Show more

“…Considering the difference in bicarbonate use by the two species of Moraceae, we can conclude that the more the plant used bicarbonate, the greater is the detrimental effect of bicarbonate. Greater bicarbonate uptake and utilization by plants may lead to a strong inhibition of saccharide metabolism and protein synthesis (Yang et al 1993, Nikolic et al 2000, Srivastava et al 1997 and/or a gradual reduction of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Bertamini et al 2001).…”

“…Plant growth in low B soil varied among crop species or even among different genotypes within the same species Jamjod 1997, 2004;Stangoulis et al 2000Stangoulis et al , 2001. The mechanisms underlying such variances remain unclear, however, according to the previous studies, it may involve the following: a superior ability to take up B from soil/medium (Yang et al 1993;Bellaloui and Brown 1998); the preferential translocation of B from root to shoot (Bellaloui and Brown 1998;Takano et al 2001), and the more efficient utilization of B within the plants (Stangoulis et al 2001;Zeng et al 2007). Thereby, it was speculated that the B efficiency mechanisms might vary among different species (Rerkasem and Jamjod 1997;Bellaloui and Brown 1998).…”

“…In tobacco, the Mg content remained unchanged (Pearce, Li, & Bush, 1999) and in olives, it decreased (Guardia & Alcantara, 2002), also under high concentrations of HCO 3 . Bicarbonate has also been considered the cause of Zn deficiency (Yang, Romheld, & Marschner, 1993), as observed in apple (Shahabi et al, 2005), spinach (Assimakopoulou, 2006), and watermelon (Colla et al, 2010) plants.…”
