Effect of biochar and attapulgite amendment on saline soil hydraulic parameters and shrinkage

Abstract: Saline soil reduces soil productivity and exacerbates food security problem. Therefore, it is increasingly necessary to find sustainable farming practices for soil and water conservation. In this regard, conditioning the soil with biochar (BC) or attapulgite (ATP) has been proved as a feasible method of improving water conservation and soil hydraulic characteristics. However, the interactive effect of BC and ATP on saline soil is still unclear. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of BC an… Show more

“…On the other hand, attapulgite soil contributes to the improvement of soil water storage capacity, thereby promoting crop growth, and root exudates can promote the formation of macro-aggregates during crop growth [44]. Wu added attapulgite directly to sandy soil; because of its significant gelling characteristics, the dispersed particles can agglomerate to form a larger particle agglomerate, thereby increasing the stability of sandy soil aggregates and improving the water holding capacity of sandy soil [45].…”

“…The soil water characteristic curve (SWC) reflects the relationship between soil suction and WHC. [10][11][12][13] It can be used to directly evaluate the improvement effect of agricultural waste returning on soil WHC and is an important parameter for studying and evaluating the soil WHC. [14][15][16][17][18] Prior studies have focused on SWC under different media such as gravel, 19 biochar, [20][21][22] and different soils, 23 showing that the SWC is mainly related to soil type and porosity.…”
