Effect of borate glass composition on its conversion to hydroxyapatite and on the proliferation of MC3T3‐E1 cells

Abstract: Glasses containing varying amounts of B(2)O(3) were prepared by partially or fully replacing the SiO(2) in silicate 45S5 bioactive glass with B(2)O(3). The effects of the B(2)O(3) content of the glass on its conversion to hydroxyapatite (HA) and on the proliferation of MC3T3-E1 cells were investigated in vitro. Conversion of the glasses to HA in dilute (20 mM) K(2)HPO(4) solution was monitored using weight loss and pH measurements. Proliferation of MC3T3-E1 cells was determined qualitatively by assay of cell d… Show more

“…tissue and Ca:P ratio on B-modified particles was significantly greater than on the control. Moreover, Brown et al [34] examined the effects of B 2 O 3 -containing glasses (borate-glass composition) on the DNA content and proliferation of osteoblastic cells (MC3T3-E1). They prepared glass-based composition with varying B 2 O 3 content and they concluded that higher B 2 O 3 content of the glass increased the conversion rate to hydroxyapatite, but resulted in a greater inhibition of cell proliferation under static culture conditions.…”

“…Human BMSCs may have a much stronger sensitivity to B than MC3T3-E1. Brown et al [23] assessed the effects of B 2 O 3 -containing glasses (borate-glass composition) on the DNA content and proliferation of osteoblastic cells (MC3T3-E1). They demonstrated that while 1B glass (low B content) had good biocompatibility and 2B glass had moderate biocompatibility, 3B glass (high B content) had little or no biocompatibility for the osteoblastic cells.…”

“…[16][17][18] Noteworthy, Brown et al 19 reported that with increasing B 2 O 3 content, greater than $1/3 of the SiO 2 in the 45S5 BG system, the glasses produced a greater inhibition of cell proliferation, particularly in static culture conditions.…”
