Effect of calcination on band gaps for electrospun titania nanofibers heated in air–argon mixtures

Abstract: The relationship between the band gap in electrospun titania nanofibers at ambient temperature and the nature of the air-argon atmosphere in which the material has been heated nonisothermally to 900 °C was investigated by ultraviolet-visible absorption spectrometry at room temperature. The results for heating in different selected air-argon mixtures show that the UVregion band gap found in unheated as-spun amorphous nanofibers, 3.33 eV, may be shifted well into the visible region by calcining in the different … Show more

“…The optical energy band gap is recognized by plotting the intercept of tangent to the x-axis in a graph. The annealed TNFs demonstrated an absorption peak shift from 325 nm to 335 nm [50,51]. The calculated optical band gap from (αhν) 1/2 versus hν plot for as-spun and annealed TNFs are 3.18 eV and 3.08 eV.…”

“…In general, two approaches have been employed to prepare electrospun metal oxide NFs, i.e., a polymer-assisted spinning method and direct electrospinning without using a polymer [230][231][232][233][234]. The former strategy involves the mixing of metal alkoxide sol with a polymer solution in which the polymer controls the rheology during electrospinning.…”

“…Albetran et al studied the effect of calcination treatment on the bandgap reduction in electrospun titania nanofibers exposed to pure argon, air, and air-argon mixtures at 900 • C [233]. The spinning solution was prepared by mixing TTIP, ethanol, and acetic acid in a fixed volume ratio of 3:3:1, followed by the addition of 12 wt% PVP.…”

“…Figure 6 shows the adsorption desorption plot for the TiO 2 and La:Co:TiO 2 nanocomposite and Table -2 summarizes their physical properties. The TiO 2 modified by Lanthanum and Cobalt are fragmentized to some extent during thermal treatment, leading to a marked increase of the surface areas and the average pore radius size and decreasing of the pore volume [44]. …”
