Effect of Carbon Nanotubes and Carbon Nanotubes/Gold Nanoparticles Composite on the Photocatalytic Activity of TiO2 and TiO2‐SiO2

Abstract: A carbon nanotube (CNT)/gold nanoparticle (NP) nanocomposite was synthesized by simultaneously reducing the Au ions and depositing Au NPs on the surface of a CNT. The functional groups were investigated with Fourier transform infrared spectra. From the Raman spectra, the D‐band and G‐band of the CNT were identified. The deposition of nanometer‐sized Au NPs on the CNT sites was observed by transmission electron microscopy. The photodegradation of methylene blue (MB) in aqueous solutions was studied using variou… Show more

“…Methylene blue (MB) and malachite green (MG) are cationic dyes widely used in the dyeing of cotton, leather, silk and paper. [33,34] In addition, MG is the most effective fungicide in the fight against saprolegia (a very common disease in aquaculture). [35] The treatment of such industrial waste is of great interest.…”

“…These results indicate that the degradation efficiencies of Cu II O, NP-3, and the composite NPs are competitive with those of TiO 2 -based catalysts [ 19 , 28 ], especially taking into consideration that the latter ones operate under UV irradiation while the heterogeneous photo-Fenton catalysts utilize visible light.…”

“…TiO 2 has a disadvantage of an inherently wide band gap (3.2 eV), which makes it able to utilize only a small portion (4%) of the solar spectrum. Application of composites, such as TiO 2 -SiO 2 [ 18 ], CNT/TiO 2 , CNT/TiO 2 -SiO 2 , Au/TiO 2 , CNT-Au/TiO 2 , and CNT-Au/TiO 2 -SiO 2 (where CNT stands for carbon nanotubes), resulted in synergistic effects on the photocatalytic performance of the individual components [ 19 ]. Copper oxide (Cu II O) is a p-type semiconductor [ 20 ] that forms monoclinic crystals resulting in specific physical properties, i.e., spin dynamics, electron correlation effects, and high temperature superconductivity.…”
