Microscopic techniques were combined to study the influence of corrosion rate on the morphologic behavior of AISI 1020 steel specimens submitted to thermal degradation of a typical acid crude oil (total acid number (TAN) = 2.1390 mg KOH g -1 and total sulfur (S) = 0.7778 wt.%). The techniques used were light microscopy (LM), scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM/EDX), atomic force microscopy (AFM) as well as Raman spectroscopy. Assays were performed in six different degradation time (t = 6, 12, 24, 36, 48 and 72 h) at 320 °C. After the exposure of the specimens to petroleum, a reduction above 37% in the TAN after t = 72 h was observed, with a maximum corrosion rate during the first periods of degradation (t = 6 and 12 h). Correlating the TAN and corrosion rate data with the microscopic data, the images of LM, AFM, and SEM/EDX showed that after 6 h of exposure to petroleum, a passivation film was formed on the surface of the steel. This film consisted of two layers, an external one, formed of FeS, and an internal one, composed of iron oxides and oxyhydroxides. However, after 48 h of thermal degradation, this morphology was altered to a single layer of FeS coating the steel surface.

Sorbitans as Corrosion InhibitorsAbstract: In the general industrial sector corrosion damage causes irreversible financial losses.As an example, in the petroleum refining industrialization process, in which electrochemical corrosive attack were correlated to several corrosive processes. Inhibitors are used in industrial scale and represent an alternative procedure to mitigate material deterioration. In this context, non ionic surfactants form a protective layer on the metal providing resistance against electrochemical damage. Sorbitan-type surfactant (Tween class) is a non-ionic corrosion inhibitor agent that have been extensively evaluated showing satisfactory results. In this present paper, the applicability and effectiveness of some sorbitans as corrosion inhibitors represent the subject of a literary review aiming the analyses of its results correlate to metallic material, temperature and corrosive media variances. In that, the applied technique, chemical structure of the surfactant and its concentrations, are herein discussed.Keywords: Corrosion inhibitor; sorbitan surfactant-type; literary review. ResumoNo setor industrial a corrosão gera prejuízos financeiros irreversíveis. Citando apenas um exemplo, a industrialização de produtos provenientes do refino do petróleo causa danos nos sistemas de dutos provenientes do desencadeamento de processos corrosivos, que se formam em função de meios eletroquímicos. A deterioração de materiais metálicos vem sendo combatida de formas variadas, o uso de inibidores de corrosão representa uma das possibilidades. Neste contexto, os tensoativos não-iônicos se destacam por formarem uma camada protetora resistente ao ataque eletroquímico. Os tensoativos do tipo sorbitanos (classe dos Tweens) são inibidores não-iônicos com eficácia comprovada, tendo sido alvo de revisão literária com destaque para suas eficácias na inibição à corrosão de materiais metálicos. Para tanto, foram apresentados resultados em função de análises das técnicas utilizadas, variações de temperatura e meio corrosivo, bem como estrutura química do tensoativo e suas concentrações.Palavras-chave: Inibidores de corrosão; tensoativos do tipo sorbitanos; revisão literária.

Corrosion inhibition effect of cationic surfactant DTAB (Dodecyl Threemethyl Ammonium Bromide) on low carbon steel in 1M HCl was studied using weight loss and OCP (Open Circuit Potential) methods. Inhibition efficiency increases with increasing of surfactant concentration. Also synergistic effect between surfactant and different alkaline metals salts (KCl, NaCl, NaBr, NaI, LiCl, Na 2 SO 4 , and NaNO 3 ) in 1 M HCl is investigated. The effect of different anions and different metal cations on inhibition efficiency is discussed. The inhibition efficiency increases with increasing of salts concentration and reaches the maximum value near 0.1 M. The results show that the synergistic effects of salts are in this order Na 2 SO 4 >NaI > LiCl > NaCl > KCl > NaBr > NaNO 3 . This inhibitor system containing cationic surfactant and an alkaline metal salt is efficient and low-cast for steel corrosion inhibition in HCl medium, even when the concentration of DTAB is as low as 0.5 × 10 -4 M.
