Effect of Cationic Surfactants with Different Counterions on the Growth of Au Nanoclusters

Abstract: The influence of a series of cationic surfactants composed of cetyltrimethylammonium cations with different counterions (Br, Cl, OH, CHOS, [CeClBr], and NO) on the aging process of gold nanoclusters (Au NCs) was studied. The finely different points of Au NCs treated by different surfactants were demonstrated by UV-vis and fluorescence spectra, transmission electron microscopy images, etc. Because of the difference of counterions, these surfactants have diverse physicochemical properties in surface activity, sp… Show more

“…These data are consistent with the results in our previous report. 39 The cmc order of XTAB is STAB < CTAB < TTAB. By comparing the surface tension results and the fluorescence analysis results, we found that the lower the cmc value and the stronger the hydrophobicity, the stronger the fluorescence intensity and the longer the fluorescence lifetime.…”

“…Atomically precise metal nanoclusters have attracted widespread attention owing to their intriguing properties and promising applications in catalysis, imaging, sensors, , fluorescence, and medicine. , To date, several homometal nanoclusters have been synthesized and their structures have been determined. The success in total structure determination provides an exclusive opportunity for understanding structure–property correlations at the atomic level. However, compared with Ag/Au nanoclusters, Cu nanoclusters containing Cu(0) are rarely reported mainly because of the lower M(I)/M(0) half-cell potential of Cu (0.52 V, compared with 1.692 V of Au and 0.7991 V of Ag), which results in the much higher oxidation susceptibility of Cu nanoclusters.…”

“…It can readily bind to GNCs, causing aggregation. The aggregation effect of different cationic surfactants on the growth of GNCs was previously reported [45,46]. As the CTAB concentration increases, aggregation increases due to the increase in the GNC's aggregation and size.…”
