Effect of chemical composition of sunflower seed meal on its true metabolizable energy and amino acid digestibility

Abstract: The effect of chemical composition of sunflower seed meal (SFSM) on TMEn and true amino acid digestibility (TAAD) was studied. In Experiment 1, the excretion pattern of three SFSM samples force-fed (30 g) to 10 adult cockerels (Hy-Line) each was followed for 84 h to determine the time interval for complete excretion of SFSM. Type of SFSM did not affect the excretion pattern of DM and energy (P=0.438, and P=0.189, respectively). Dry matter and energy excreted every 12 h decreased linear and quadratically (P < 0… Show more

“…All the values, except for EE, show negative correlation with TME, in which the CF, NDF, ADF are highly correlated with TME (P < 0.001; Table 3). This result is in general agreement with other report showing that variable fiber fraction probably is the predominant factor in influencing the TME of wheat by-products for duck (Villamide and San Juan, 1998).…”

“…Literature studies found various chemical compositions of SFM (Villamide and San Juan, 1998;Senkoylu and Dale, 1999). This variation may be due to different grain processing methods, as reported by Pinheiro et al (2002).…”

“…It was reported that the soluble and insoluble constituents of nonstarch polysaccharides content are 4.5 and 23.1%, respectively (Düsterhöft et al, 1992). In fact, a strong negative correlation between the fiber fractions and the sunflower seed meal true metabolizable energy has been found (Janssen and Carre, 1985;Villamide and San Juan, 1998). Arija et al (1998) also demonstrated that fat digestibility decreased when full-fat sunflower kernel was used, which could be because of the limited ability of the young chicks to extract oil from the intact cells in the digestion process.…”

“…The by-product rendered by the oil industry is used as an alternative source of protein in animal nutrition. The seed of high-oil sunflower varieties, if properly processed, has valuable protein with similar amino acid availability to that in soybean meal (Villamide and San Juan, 1998). Nevertheless, conflicting data were reported regarding the nutritive value of sunflower seed in broilers (Roth-Maier and Kirchgessner, 1995;Arija et al, 1998).…”
