Effect of Chemical Disinfectants on the Color Stability of Maxillofacial Silicones: An In Vitro Study

Abstract: Disinfection procedures affect the color stability of maxillofacial silicone. Chlorhexidine gluconate solution (2%) can be effectively used as a chemical disinfectant for maxillofacial prostheses. Antibacterial soap produced clinically unacceptable color changes in the silicone, hence is not advisable as a disinfectant.

“…The properties of the silicone and the underlying tissues should not be adversely affected by the disinfecting chemical solution. 4,[6][7][8] The increasing incidence of oral cancer is the reason for the advanced research in various maxillofacial materials. Silicone elastomers chemically termed as polydimethyl siloxane have been the material of choice.…”

“…[ 25 ] A routine mechanical washing may dissolve and dislodge color or pigment from the superficial layers of silicone prosthesis as well as abrade and roughen the material surfaces, which make the material more susceptible to microbial colonization. [ 21 26 ] An alternative option proposed for cleaning the silicone prosthesis is to immerse the material in chemical disinfectants such as oxidizing agents (sodium hypochlorite, peroxide) and non-oxidizing agents (alcohol, chlorhexidine). The chlorhexidine gluconate solution was a potent disinfectant for silicone prostheses in the previous studies.…”
