This investigation was carried out at the farm of Sids Agricultural Research Station, ARC, in Beni Suef Governorate in two successive seasons study the effect of different levels of organic manure and NPK application on quality, quantity and storability of onion (Allium cipa L) as well as some physio-chemical soil properties at harvest stage. A split plot design was used in the experiment, where the main plots were located with organic manure (0.0, 24.0 and 48.0 t ha -1 ) represent without, half and full recommended rates of FYM and the sub plots were represent the NPK fertilizers (0.0, half and full recommended rates). The full recommended NPK rates were 288/75/115 N, P2O5 and K2O kg ha -1 Results show that increasing organic manure levels improved all studied soil properties and fertility after onion harvest, i.e., soil reaction, organic matter, bulk density, soil available N, P and K, except soil salinity which positively responded to FYM application. Also, organic manure application enhanced the onion dry matter, total dissolved solids (TDS), plant height and number of leaves/plant at 90 and 110 days, bulb weight, total yield, culls yield and marketable yield. Increasing NPK levels had positive effect on soil fertility, plant height, number of leaves/plant, bulb weight total yield, culls yield. Whereas dry matter %, T.D.S%, marketable yield and storability responded to NPK levels only at half recommended rate of NPK. Combined high level of organic manure with half recommended rate of NPK gave the best vegetative growth, yield and storability of onion plants.

Integrated management of purple blotch disease complex for onion seed production in Bangladesh

Onion suffers from many diseases and among them purple blotch complex is devastating for both bulb and seed production in Bangladesh. To formulate an integrated approach for its management, different IPM components viz. three fungicides viz. Rovral 50 WP (Iprodione), Dithan M-45 (Mancozeb) and Score 250 EC (Difenconazol); two botanicals viz. Alamanda leaf extract (Allamanda cathartica) and Neem leaf extracts (Azadiracta indica); four soil amendments viz. Poultry manure, bioagent, saw dusts and micronutrients (Zn @ 0.45/L +B @ 2.5g/L) were evaluated under field condition. The experiment was conducted at the farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, during 2011-2012. Pathogeninicity test indicated that Alternaria porri and Stemphylium vesicarium were the pathogens where S. vesicarium initiated the infection and A. porri facilitated the subsequent infection and made a complex form of disease. Among the chemical fungicides, Score 250 EC was found promising followed by Rovral 50 WP against purple blotch complex in terms of reduction of disease incidence and severity ultimately contributing to increased yield (134% and 129%, respectively) over control. Among botanicals, Alamanda leaf extract produced better result compared to neem leaf extract (99.6% and 67.6% respectively). This study, conducted at Ege University, Odemis Vocational School, aimed to investigate the influence of poultry manure applications on the nutrient, sucrose, fructose, and glucose content of second crop onions. In this research, three onion varieties (Burgaz, Snow White, Champion), three different doses of poultry manure (20, 40, 60 t ha−1), and mineral fertilizer were employed. An unfertilized plot was employed as the control. The experiment was designed using a split-split plot arrangement and replicated three times. The analysis comprised the assessment of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn), and copper (Cu) contents in samples collected from both onion leaves and bulbs. In addition, sucrose, fructose, and glucose levels in the bulb were determined. The Snow White variety contains the highest level of fructose, sucrose, and glucose compared to other varieties. In the exploration of the impact of macro-micro element contents in bulbs, the Champion variety exhibited significantly higher levels of N, Ca, Fe, and Cu compared to other varieties. Additionally, P, K, and Na contents were significantly higher in Champion and Snow White varieties compared to Burgaz bulbs. The difference between the applications of these nutrients was insignificant except for N, P, Na, and Fe. The Nitrogen, Potassium, Sodium, and Iron contents of soils were the lowest control, while the highest dose application had the highest value at 60 t ha−1 dose. The difference among the applications in these nutrients was significant except for Mg and Cu. It may be recommended to use 40 t ha-1 dose in onion cultivation.
